Walt's point about electrical isolation over optical is a good one!
It's worth adding that any "prosumer" or professional sound cards used for
home recording/studios/DAWs will support at least 44.1 and 48K, and any
contemporary card will probably go at least up to 96K, at 16, 24 and even
32 bits.
Also AFAIK since the Mac went to the PCI bus, cards are the same for PCs
and Macs, it's only the drivers that limit what can be used with which
system...
