Yes I also can imaging that animals can 'grieve'. Whenever I leave my dog
inside because I am trying to record something without his interference, he
grieves! (And not quietly either!) ;-)
However my copulation theory was based on the fact that the live bird seeme=

to always be approaching from the rear, in one photo actually looks like it
has mounted the other bird, and because I can easily believe that the
particular posture of the injured/dead bird may resemble a behavioral
trigger normally limited to a receptive female.
