See if you can contact Doug Tompkins, Rudy. He's the fellow who split
from his wife, Suzie, after they sold Esprit (their international
clothing company) about a dozen years ago,. With the bucks from the
sale, Tompkins bought about 10% of central Chile including a swatch
of land that stretches practically from the Pacific shore to the
Andes and has held it as a protected parcel. I hear it's a great
place to record if you can make the contacts. The late Galen Rowell's
group would know. So would Yvon Chouinard, owner of Patagonia
(Ventura, CA), all of whom know Tompkins well. I've only met him a
few times and don't have a number or email but I'm sure he'd be
welcoming if you can find a way to make contact.
