Many thanks for your encouragements, Bernie and Lang.
I often think of that sentence in Bernie's book about the huge number of
recording hours it now takes to produce 1 hour of "pro quality"
recording... When I reached the forest, on the day I recorded that
Nuthatch, the first think I realized is that a new set of air traffic
routes from Brussels international airport are now open just over that
area (these new routes have made the news headlines several times over
the last few months, but they have just been adopted a few weeks ago).
The result is that from 6:00 to 6:40 -- on a Sunday morning ! -- it has
been impossible to have just more than 30 seconds of
"non-highly-polluted" natural sound. For some reason, the airport
traffic was suddenly reduced for a while, and that's when I could record
that Nuthatch. But it would have been impossible, once again, just a few
minutes later...
That is the type of situation that forces to think about the incredible
level of noise pollution we are constantly coping with ! Of course, we
are amongst the most developped countries, and we have one of the
highest population densities... I'll end up going back to Canada
sometime !
