Rich:
For this particular application, I want to use Quicktime primarily to
prevent or at least greatly discourage download of the sample soundfile.
That is not possible with mp3.
I also want the soundfile embedded in the small window because I will be
adding more text along with a pay-per-download option in that same window.
To accomplish the pay-per-download I may use one of the new micropayment
technologies that would allow for the download of an mp3 file (see
www.peppercoin.com as an example of a micropayment option; Smithsonian
Folkways is adopting peppercoin for their forthcoming music store).
I could use Media Player or Real Player, but neither encourages the
embedding of soundfiles and the player into a web page. Instead, they
encourage the opening of their own branded player, which I don't want to
happen for various reasons.
As for Quicktime being "a quick and dirty group of applications", I guess I
do take exception. Quicktime is the de facto standard for video editing and
the possibilities it offers for the internet are really quite impressive
(see book "Quicktime for the Web" for details). Also, Quicktime is the firs=
t
on the block to adopt the new AAC compression.
My biggest concern right now is that too many PC owners won't be able to
play the Quicktime file.

Feel free to disregard my opinion. But since you asked.
Quicktime is a quick and dirty group of applications that replace
having to build a real html. That may not be true, but it is the
perception. You are above it and I don't recommend it for you.
If you want to go off standard, posting in flac would be a statement,
but it should only be done with a mp3 option. Standard audio formats
change, and a frog is a frog. Right now, that frog is mp3 for
compressed audio. Quicktime only serves the weak designer and not
the net. Maybe next year it will change, but I don't see it this
year.
