A amplifier alone will only give you calls up to 5000 Hz, that will
leave out the higher pitched birds, and quite a few other calls.

When you consider that most all headphones and walkman come with
warnings about playing them too loud, overcoming a 65 dB loss should not
be that much of a problem.

The frequency shifting that this does would bring those higher pitched
birds and so on down into your usable range, though you would at the
same time loose calls on the low end. Your hearing loss is much greater
than that of age in a normal person, but in some ways mimics it. It
might be worth writing Lang about it.
