Hi,
I've posted to this list before, but I'll re-introduce
myself. I'm an ambient, experimental composer and I
wanted to share a track with you from my just
released, first solo project Aperus "tumbleweed
obfuscated by camera failure". I owe a great deal of
debt to all of you since most of what I've learned
about equipment and field recording came from this
list.
"Leaves, Waves" isn't really a song, per se, but more
of an enviornmental soundscape along the lines of
someone like Alio Die. It was built almost entirely
from field recordings in the winter of 2003 using a
Sharp minidisc recorder and a Rode NT3 mic.

Some of the sounds on the track include:
1. Predominately, the rustling of leaves still
clinging to trees in the dead of winter. I made
multiple journeys, in varying weather conditions and
made dozones of recordings. The backdrop is a sampled
collage of these recordings.
2. On one of the trips, I found a trailer deep in the
woods with dozens of 12' segments of thick plastic
pipe covered with a plastic tarp. It appeared that an
irrigation project was under way. This trailer turned
out to be useful as a source for various sounds: - The
strange echoing sounds you here were made by placing
the mic in one of the 12' segments of pipe, then
lifting and releasing the metal latch on the trailer.
- The bass pluck sound was made by pulling down on the
plastic tarp covering the pipe and then releasing it.
- The metallic clang was made by recording the latch
on the trailer in close proximity.
3. The only synth on the recording - the high pitched
beacon like sound - was made using a Roland JP8080.
If you have any comments feel free to email me. And
yeah, it would be great if you dropped by my site to
learn more about the album.

But, I really just wanted to share this track with you
because I thought some of you might find it
interesting. I've learned a lot from this list and
hope to continue creating environmental soundscapes in
the future. Thanks for all the valuable information.
Happy Holidays,
Brian
