In fact the DAT Stereo element will function as a nice stereo element
without the reflector, filling the role that the ME 62 was for. You
could get by with just the Telinga.

I definitely agree, stereo will give you much more satisfying
recordings. Think about putting the entire amazon on one spot and
listening to it vs that spread out as it is normally. That's the
difference between mono and stereo. Especially for ambiance you want
stereo, but even in recording calls you want the caller in a stereo
field rather than everything all piled together. The calls will sound
more natural that way.

If you are entirely new to nature recording it's better to work with
just a limited kit. Each mic has to be learned to get the best out of
it. The Telinga is a very good mic to start out with. Try to get in a
little time recording with the gear before you go so you are familiar
with it and have some idea how to get a good recording with it. In
particular you want to learn to set the gain properly before you go.

Don't forget a good pair of closed headphones. The Telinga will pick up
open headphones, in fact it will pick up the closed ones if you point it
at yourself while recording... And you need to use headphones to know
what you are getting.
