So then I had to look up 'cladistics'! "A method of classification 
of animals and plants into groups based on characteristics which 
originated in a common evolutionary ancestor." (Concise Oxford 10th 
ed)

By the way the cassowary is also found in the Cape York Peninsula in 
far north Queensland, Australia, across the Torres Strait from Papua 
New Guinea.
