Rudy, thanks for the great run down.  I found the laptop tapers posts 
which applied Len's original specs and Bob Cain concluded, "the pre 
equivalent noise (due to their EIN related back through the mic's 
sensitivity) would be 12 dBA for the mic2496."  The mic sensitivity 
he used is for the Rode NT1-- very close to the same sensitivity of 
an Sennhesier MKH-40 for reference.

If correct, this would make the self noise for the 2496 on par with 
the HHB portadisc and a tad better than the Tascam DA-P1.  Very 
workable, but wouldn't 13dB less gain than the mp-2  mic pre be very 
noticeable in low sound level situations? Towards a more general 
comparison, Walt, is the MP-2 gain quite a bit higher or on par with 
the portadisc? I assumed they're on par from previous comments. 
~$1000 less than a vaporware sound devices 722 is interesting,.. Rob
