Thanks Dan. A simple but satisfying fix once the diagnosis was made. Taking the faceplate off also allowed me to appreciate the weakness of the mount for the XLR connector. From the outside it looks ALL METAL but there are only two small screws through a bit of plastic no more than a millimetre thick to hold the whole arrangement in place. I have now arranged strain relief - a couple of electrical ties attach the mike cord to the recorder carrying strap with some free play.
