Thanx to all who have made suggestions as to how to resuscitate what
appeared to be a dead LED on my brand new PMD222.
Not a dry joint. Not a bad cable connection.=20
I got the courage, after Dan's advice, to try to fixit myself. So
warranty void; but hey, I had no warranty!
With the faceplate off I touched up the joints of the LED with a hot
iron. Light ON.
Faceplate fitted back in position =96 light OFF. I thought the
faceplate might be pushing the LED legs backwards and causing them
to break contact with the PCB tracks. In fact the tracks did seem
to float off the board. However I thought that electro-mechanical
connection was maintained.
Faceplate removed once more.=20
Liberal amounts of shiny new solder applied. Light ON. Faceplate
repositioned =96 light ON. Faceplate fixing screws inserted =96 light
OFF. Remove screws. Apply modulated pressure to faceplate. Light
goes ON and OFF. Faceplate removed.=20
Noticed that legs of LED are long enough to make contact with metal
support of [Record Mode / Record Level] potentiometer and switch
behind. Trim legs with side-cutters. LIGHT ON and has stayed ON
appropriately since.
Fits in with the fact that the first time I noticed the light ON was
at 05:30 one morning when I was trying to tape the White Plumed
Honeyeater. It is still quite cold here in the mornings at that
time. Temperature difference must have made a gap to remove contact
with the metal support and allow the light to come on. The light
went off as contact with the metal support was made when the day
warmed up.
Why didn't I think of throwing the thing in the freezer and work
this out before I had to pull it apart???
I wonder if the Marantz people want a serviceman here in the
Alice?????
