You may also be getting mic preamp noise, as the balanced mic preamp
in this machine is very noisy. I don't agree with Marantz that
they've fixed this problem (according to my measurements the
balanced preamp is about 10dB noisier on old versions and about 6dB
noisier on the new versions). The easiest solution is to get a mic
cable or adapter cable that will plug into the mini-jack on the side
instead of the XLR jack on the front. This will bypass the noisy
circuit, and the difference is important for bird recording where
the input signal from the microphone is weak.
