"What's wrong with them?" - nothing, really, unless you compare them with
DAT's and MD's.
They are definitelly less power consuming than DAT's and perhaps (?) more
reliable.

When you learn about a cassette machine, don't forget that it has it's
promissed frequency response at -20 db and don't forget the modulation
noise. Modulation noise is often masked when you record music, by overtones
- but the "nicer" a bird is, the "purer" (more sine-wave-like) it is, the
more you hear modulation noise as "the sounds from the lips from a flute
player". It comes on top of the bird song. Also called "noise trumpet". It
is caused by mechanical tape vibrations.

Every analog recorder has an oscillator. This feeds the erase head and
de-magnitize (erase) what is on the tape. The tone is above hearing level.
"Bias" is a part of the erase signal, fed to the recording head, to
pre-magnitize the tape. Different tapes need different "bias".

EQ means that you don't magnitize the tape with a linear signal, as it is
from the mic, but with more high frequencies and less low frequencies. Then
you replay the tape with the reverse frequency curve - "equalization". This
way you get a better dynamic range out of the tape.

I still havn't got any mail from you.

Klas.
