Maybe a fisher (Martes pennanti)?? One sound that the fisher makes is loud,
high-pitched, and does have the quality of a human voice. (First time I
heard one I thought it was someone calling for help.) But it doesn't sound
like "arf" - more like a cry or a yelp. When I've heard them, there's been a
space of about 5-10 seconds between each call.

Although they are seen during the daytime hours, the fisher is most active
during the night. Their preferred habitat is coniferous or mixed forests
with a closed canopy.
