Better to keep your backup in another location. At 90 bucks you can afford
another at another location - an office, a kids house, with your
mother-in-law - whatever.

Subject: [Nature Recordists] re: backups
I find I do backups more frequently
when the procedure is as painless as
possible. That's why I recommend
backing up to another hard disc
instead of to CD or DVD.
If you're concerned about the
possibility that a power surge could
damage both primary and backup discs,
then consider purchasing the backup
disc in an external chassis with its
own power supply. Then keep the
external disc powered off and unplugged
until it's time to make the backup.
Or you can place the backup disc in a
removable caddy such as
www.amselectronics.com/Products/Comet/DK-130.html
Remove the disc caddy from the computer
and keep it in a drawer until you're
ready to plug and play.
Hard discs are cost-effective these
days, too. I recently purchased a
160GB disc for $90. Pretty cheap
insurance!
