Mark,

Check that the tape counter is not stuck or loose. If it is stuck,
pushing the zero reset switch may help it temporarily. These often
fall apart with a lot of use. Replacement requires complete
disassembly.

This is the closest match to the sound you describe. Other common
possible causes for Marantz sounds:

Fast ticking and/or erratic speed -- usually motor worn out
Various scraping or rubbing - wires or component touching pulleys
Rythmic grinding sound -- worn out forward idler gear, loose belts
Soft ticking -- dirt on pinch roller
Loud buzz in playback -- loose circuit board screws (remove bottom
and tighten them up, adding 2.5mm lock washers recommended)

We service Marantz recorders sent from all over the world. I don't
know anyone to recommend in Canada.

Thanks,
Adam Liberman
