Certainly can't have that ol' gateau and eat it...or so goes the
ancient apologia and one fabulous example of a faulty logical
premise. Well understand your love for the controlled straight-pipe
explosions, Tony. I used to thrive on the bum-tingle but finally
exchanged it out for hybrid technology early this year to mitigate
some of the contradictions between what I was saying, advocating, and
actually doing. Sure, I still have the two-cycle tech lying around
somewhere rusting in an appropriate place of honour, and which is
where it should be relegated if we're at all serious - however few
in number we might be. Otherwise, where does setting the example
begin? And the SUV I use in the field for work has been neglected and
unused for four months, now. But I'll be firing it up for a working
trip to Yellowstone 1000 miles (1600km) northeast of here in
September. As for noise, we live 18 miles (29km) as the common crow
flies from Infineon Raceway (formerly Sear's Point and the Northern
California home of NASCAR races, drag and motorcycle races). Despite
the fact that the sound during any given Sunday during the July drags
at Infineon has to travel over several low mountain ranges, a
restored wetland or two, two cities, and dozens of large vineyards to
get to our humble 10 acres, we hear the incessant engine roar burning
up fuel and the grind of rubber every five minutes or so...and we're
a long way away (be happy to post a MP3 recording from our back
yard). Some call this addition to the soundscape, music. Frankly,
I'll take the sound of that wonderful kookaburra of yrs, clean and
fresh, any day of the year.
