Tascam Problem

Anyone out there with experience of this problem with a Tascam DA-P1 DAT
recorder?

Mine was first used mid-June 1999, and so is 4 years old. Doesn't get much
use except in the May-August lyrebird breeding season, and not much then in
'01 and '02 because of the drought.

1. With the original internal nicad battery the Tascam refuses to turn on.

2. With the Tascam mains transformer plugged in it appears to work normally=
.

3. With an external 7.2V rechargeable battery plugged into the socket that
takes power from the transformer, it switches on, but after about 5 seconds=
,
switches itself off again.

The Tascam transformer when plugged in, either powers the recorder or
charges the internal nicad, depending on the position of a two-way switch.
A few days ago it recharged the completely discharged nicad.

The plug on the transformer is a peculiar Tascam plug, and not purchasable
as far as I have been able to ascertain. In order to be able to use
external batteries to back up the internal one for use in the field, I had
to cut the lead from the transformer and fit plugs so that I can connect
either the transformer or an external battery.

I am mystified as to why the Tascam will work with current from the
transformer, but not from the battery, going in via the same lead and plug.

On Monday a Musiclab electronics expert will look at it. (I hope.) But if
anyone has experienced this problem and can give advice, it might save him
time - and me, dollars.

TIA

Syd Curtis in Brisbane, Australia.
