The Hawk Cuckoo is the most heard of the 6 species of Cuckoos there and
it sounds very similar to this, there is also the Common Cuckoo found in
great numbers in Chengdu, I will pull my recordings out and see (if I
can find the buggers!!) it was about 10 years ago when I was there.

They do love their bamboo!
This was recorded actually not particularly close (by binaural
standards!)... perhaps 3-5 meters? This track as I recall I had to
bring
the levels up on, you might notice the noise floor. Incidentally it was
the DSMs going directly into a Sony MZ-R700, which is to date my least
favorite portable consumer MD recorder (from a sound perspective).
Btw I'd asked this list before for help identifying the cuckoo that
graces
this (and many other recordings I have from the region)... :)
Incidentally, if you didn't see them, there's a submenu of other (cough)
species in the upper right... :)
best,
aaron
