I think the new Sound Devices 744T
*is* a four channel recorder -- take
a look at this photo, which shows
two standard size XLR and two mini
XLR analog connectors, labeled input
1-2-3-4.

Four channels at 24 bits resolution and
48,000 samples per second would generate
a data stream of a little more than 2 GB
per hour. The Toshiba 1.8" hard disc,
used in devices like the Apple iPod, is
available today in sizes up to 20GB,
with a 40GB unit due for release this
summer. That's enough capacity for
many hours of four channel recording.
The CompactFlash slot shown in this
photo looks like a Type 2 slot. (The
type 1 slot is 3.3mm high, type 2 is 5mm,
so there's very little penalty to use
type 2.) If so, the 744T can also accept
both flash memory cards and the IBM/Hitachi
MicroDrive cards. But since the 744T
has a Firewire port for rapid data transfer
from internal hard disc to a computer,
the removable memory may not be needed.
Perhaps, as in the new DEVA equipment,
the extra storage is meant to record
simultaneously for security.
Dan Dugan, did the Sound Devices staff
give any indication of the price or
availability for this new gadget?
