Sony MZ-N1 operating help?

Mini-diskers:

For Christmas, my son received this little device and a Sony ECM stereo
mic. Our group's guess was correct, as far as I can tell, the USB cable
ONLY transfers sound from PC >> MD, not the other way. But the instruction=

book, which I know was around the house in December, cannot be found. I
have the software book, but it is useless for transferring recordings to pc=
.

I have figured out many of the symbols by making a list experimentally as
to what they seem to do. I have so far managed to record without
overwriting previous recordings, by hitting "end search" before hitting
"rec". And I can play back, although it keeps grouping recordings into
"groups" and I cannot get it to just make tracks NOT bunched into
groups. Does anyone know how to turn off the groups. Or how to set the
record to manual and adjust input the gain? It has something to do with
the pause button and the menu button, but it eludes me so far.

Sorry I have never used one of these small devices and they have an
operating logic all their own.

PS I have never seen a Sharp MD in any store in this state, ever.

my best regards,

Marty Michener
