Hi Bruce:

Good question.
We have run this one around several times in the archives, but it hasn't 
come up recently at all.

Cool Edit, in all its versions, uses the RIFF structure of AIFF and WAV 
files to embed chunks - they can be any number of different types of 
chunks, as specified by the chunk ID in each point.

In practice, just hit Ctrl-I and type in any info you want.  I actually 
save a thumbnail picture of each species of bird with each file for my 
software EnjoyBirds - all 820 species.  The obviously most important are;

where, when and how the sound was recorded.
by whom
who owns the copyright
comments
what species call when, as you id them.

MP3 is very limited in what it can hold.
