Here's the results of some quick measurements that suggest it shouldn't be
too hard to locate sounds.
I set up two microphones a couple feet apart (it was pouring rain outside,
that's how I picked 2 feet) and recorded while I a) made a click at the
right mic, b) made a click at the left mic c) made a click on the far side
of the right mic from the left, d) clicked from a point equidistant (about
10 feet) from the mics.
Using an old version of the "Gram" program, I digitized the recording and
measured the time the sounds arrived at the two mics to the nearest ms. (Of
course one can do about 20-40 times better than this)
Mic1-Mic2
Click position difference in time (ms)
a 2
b -2
c 2
d 0
My take on it is that these times are completely consistent with the
geometry of the situation.
Cheers,
Steve P
