Good question, Walt! My experience is that even trained ears have a
problem relating single source sounds to choruses. I have been in the
field numerous times when a single frog or toad called and then had very
experienced naturalists ask me: What was that!!?? So for anuran sounds I
would have both available for every species, where possible.
For birds, in my software, I have tried to use short cuts of BOTH if I had
them.
I arrange each sound file, by my own convention, in this order:
1 song(s),
2 duets
3 calls
4 chorus
5 drums, etc.
6 wing sounds
Of course, for most of the 800 plus species I have only one or two types of
sounds. And then there is geographical variation . . . . but I am leaving
THAT to all the excellent albums you all have produced, and telling my
customers to buy, buy, buy!
