I've recorded all over Costa Rica, Howard, and I haven't found a bad spot
yet! My favorites spots are on the Southeast coast, around Puerto Viejo de=
Talamanca and in the north central rain forest around (coincidentally)
Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqu=ED. Around either of these you can get to very
quiet, very diverse habitats easily. I like to stay at the "El Gavilan"
(The Hawk) in the northern town and at the "El Pizote" (The Coati) in the
south. They are pretty quiet places and have tons of excellent, but
different habitat around them, so you can walk out into the fray right from=
your room.
I also love Monteverde, but it;'s harder to get to anything quiet around
there - motorcycles, trucks, etc. rule the air, but the birds are
fantastic. The area around Rancho Naturalista is very nice and quieter, and=
the area around Volcan Arenal has tons of great birding and recording
opportunities, also a lot of accommodations, as it is a major tourist
destination.
How long are you planning to stay?
