Do not consider hard drives, removable or not as your archive. That's
just working storage.

Archive to optical media of some kind.

If headed for audio CD, then bring them in as 44.1k 16bit files, the
same as audio CD. If the original is mono, then you can save space by
bringing them in as mono. Audio CD's themselves are only a stereo
format, though most audio CD burning software can take mono files and do
the conversion on the fly.

For PC's, it's .wav, for macs or unix or anybody else it's aiff.
