Brian, The lower the amount of dB's given for the noise, the better that amount is: if mic A has 6 dB selfnoise and mic B has 9 dB selfnoise than mic B produces the loudest (noise)signal and therefor has the loudest noise at low levels. Note, I only answered your question, there are a lot of other issues regarding these and other figures that I didn't deal with right now.
