The D cell sled approach works very well for me too. The 1.2v, 2200
mAh rechargeable Energizer ACCU nickel-metal D cells go 90%+ as long
as fresh alkalines and weigh half as much. Recently tried a $20
dc-ac invertor and small lawnmower battery for several all night
recordings and that worked fine too.
