A device like this was recently acquired by the Cumberland Island Museum
(www.cimuseum.org). I was there last week and saw it in person, although they
haven't started using it yet. Theirs has several D batteries for power, records
onto a cheapo Aiwa cassette recorder, and is housed in a plastic tool box. The
microphone is a Radio Shack mono omnidirectional mic (sorry, don't know the
model no.) housed in a plastic bottle as shown in the photo on the USGS page
above. The unit has timers for controlling the frequency and length of
recording sessions. They're going to send me some recordings from it, so I'll
let the group know how they turn out.
