It would seem to me that HHB already has 80% of a perfect nature sounds
recorder already made.

All they need to do is use the portadisc recorder casing and drop in say a
30Gb hard drive with associated motherboard and software and a USB2 and or
Firewire output for fast file transfer to the computer.

They would need to add a buffer for shock proofing the hard drive and leave
all the other nice features of the portadisc i.e. the ergonomics, the XLR
inputs etc. Battery capacity would probably have to be increased to cope with
the extra load of the hard disk.
Making the hard drive bay upgradeable would be a nice touch so that we could
install larger hard drives when required or even swap them over in the field.

Oh and while they are at it, a few rubber corners on the casing and improved
strap attachments.
Just give me a 2 track machine that I can afford!!
Come on!! HHB or some other company will beat you to it!!!

I've got my checkbook ready and I bet there are a quite a few others out there
too.
