RFI: BIRD RECORDINGS

2 quick enquiries if anyone can help:

1. I'm preparing for a trip to the Yucatan peninsula at the end of May.
Does anyone know of tapes/CD's etc which I could buy on bird recordings from
Mexico? Alternatively, does anyone out there have recordings of any of the
following species which you'd be willing to send me as an e-mail attachment,
preferably as a .wav file?

Cozumel Vireo
Cozumel Wren
Yucatan Wren
Yucatan Nightjar
Yucatan Poorwill
Yucatan Flycatcher
Rose-throated Tanager
Caribbean Elaenia
Black Catbird
Yucatan Woodpecker
Yucatan Jay
Orange Oriole
White-browed Wren
Grey-throated Chat
Green-backed Sparrow
Ruddy Crake
Yucatan Bobwhite
Singing Quail
Mangrove Vireo

2. I have heard recently relating that there are extensive sound collections
owned by e.g. the UK National Sound Archive, Cornell Laboratory etc. Both
seem to indicate that it is possible to obtain copies of these sounds. Have
any of you used this service? IF so, could you explain briefly to me how it
works? Also, are you able to give me a rough idea of the cost?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Spring arrives at much different times here. It is already spring in the
southern US and I am still -20 when I go outside to get my paper in the
morning (winter is hanging on an unusually long time this year).

We have a lot of birds at the end of may but a significant number are not
here before the end of the first week of June.

I think everybody should pick their own time. I am sure a good time for me
would be far too late for people in the south - but maybe not because the
breeding season down there is quite spread out. Our birds must get here
breed and get the heck out before it gets too cold. I was amazed at the
birds singing in Oregon and Northern California a few years ago. Things
like the Olive-sided flycatcher were still singing away whereas ours had
quit a week before.

Chorus"?

I'll be in it. Is it to be springtime from our own region, or do we want to
pick a month for 2002? Maybe, we each choose when? If 20 people contribute
for 1 x 60 minute CD, that's 3 minutes each, or for 30 people contribute, 2
minutes. It would be great to hear a collection of sounds from around the
world so that we can "put a sound to a name" for the contributors in this
group.
