Good afternoon members

Thank you to those who replied promptly to volunteer to lead outings to the Western Edge sites.

I still have 8 dates that are available for the first half of 2026 and have just gone through my spreadsheet of past field trips and have selected sites that have not been visited for at least 3 years.  Perhaps you would like to lead a trip to one of them:

  • Lake Tuggeranong
  • Lindsay Pryor Arboretum and/or National Arboretum
  • Mt Taylor
  • Oakey Hill

NAMADGI NP INCLUDING BRINDABELLAS, & COTTER AREA - most would last into the afternoon
  • Nursery Swamp
  • Settlers Track
  • Yerrabi Track
  • Micalong Swamp
  • Blue Range Hut &/or Sherwood historic site
  • Bracks Hole Road and Cotter Dam
OTHERS:
  • Enchanted Hill near Royalla
  • Lake Road, near Bungendore

If you would be prepared to lead an outing to one of the above (or if you have other, fresh ideas), please contact me asap with location and preferred date/s.

many thanks

Some of you may be aware of the Conservation Council campaign to protect the Western Edge of Canberra from development.  To quote their website:

Canberra’s Western Edge, a beautiful patch of critically endangered ecosystems to Canberra’s west, is up for unsustainable, unaffordable and dangerous development by the ACT Government. With Canberra’s urban boundary being set by the ACT Government over the next two years, we have to tell our government now, before decisions are made, that we want our Western Edge protected — not developed — so it can continue to provide vital services to our community.

To raise awareness in the community, the Conservation Council is running a series of bushwalks in conjunction with local bushwalking groups, and also Kim is leading a bird walk for the community.  (She is also leading a walk for Canberra Birds in February).

To make Canberra Birds' members aware of the areas at risk, I thought it would be a good idea for field trips in 2026 to include some of the areas on the Western boundary.  Thus, I am seeking leaders for trips to:
  • Cooleman Ridge
  • Kama Nature Reserve
  • Tong's Hole (one I had never heard of - it is off Stockdill Drive in Holt)
I still have many gaps to fill in next year's programme, so if you can help with the above walks or have other ideas, these are the dates that are available:
  • Feb 8, 22
  • March 15, 22, 29
  • April 19
  • May 10, 24
  • Jun 7, 21
Many thanks
Sue Lashko
