Hi Philip,

Thanks for the reply! My best guess at this point is a pale morph Brown Falcon. My wife and I will have to try walking in the same area again, but it won't be until the weekend so the bird will probably have moved on long since then. Next time I'll make sure that my camera is ready to use.

Depends how well you saw it. Also maybe Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike or Black-shouldered Kite. Yes the Grey Goshawk is a rare visitor to Canberra but is bigger than a Kestrel. Would a Kestrel risk chasing it? Pacific Baza has only one ACT record and is much bigger than a Kestrel.

Any chance it was something else, like a Pallid Cuckoo, Rob? They can look distinctly hawk-like at times.

Walking at Farrer Ridge this afternoon, we saw a Nankeen Kestrel chase away another small raptor of similar size to the Kestrel. The underside of the wings of the other bird seemed to be light grey. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera ready at the time. I don't think that the Grey Goshawk is found in Canberra and I'm dubious about a Pacific Baza. Does anyone have any ideas what it might have been?
