An interesting thought David, and I have noticed that the Trucking Yard Lane Whistling Ducks do disappear from time to time. (I tend to visit Bungendore most months.) It would be nice though if they turned up more often in key birding spots in
the ACT - if only to engage the strong interest of ACT birders! More seriously though, Martin Butterfield or Michael Lenz (and others of course) might have thoughts on the movements of the species in our area (ie COG's NSW area of interest). It could be that
they circulate between areas birders visit and areas birders can't access. Goodness knows. I do notice dry period/wet period movement of the species in other areas of NSW I visit.
