The National Bicentennial Trail is a 5000 km trial from Victoria to Queensland and runs through the ACT from north to south. It was set up for horses initially but it is now recognised that hikers and cyclists also like to use it. I have book six of the maps
which include the ACT, if anyone would like to see it.

Yes, that's my understanding too Don. ACTmapi is very clear on this.
All other locals I've come across there have been really friendly, just this one guy who says we're turning it into a "tourist attraction."

I recall that public access in that area became an issue with a new landowner a few years ago but was resolved by Namadgi staff. I’m pretty sure there is public right of way well past the entrance to Top Naas property, in fact right
through Caloola, where it divides in two, giving access to both the national park entrance on the east side of Naas River and also to the beginning of Gudgenby Creek Fire Trail on the west side of the river.

I was abused by a man yesterday telling me to get out - he was in a red Mazda and clearly not a landowner. I was on the road, well before the Caloola right angle turn. He told me I was on private land and that I had no right to be there.
From what I can work out, according to ACTmapi, it is a public road with a right of way through the last section after the 3rd cattle grid. I told him this and he just kept abusing me and telling me that we were turning it. I asked a man who was fixing his
fence nearby if it was private property and he said no, the road is public access.
I have come across this local at Jerra Wetlands.

Ok then I have a question. I was recently shooting (photos) on Top Nass Rd and was berated by a local telling me the the travelling stock route past the Top Naas gate was ‘private property’ and I was trespassing and told with anger me to
get out! Is this correct?
I thought it was public land.

Greetings. Sometime ago a subscriber asked list members whether there are any stock routes in Canberra. The answer was no.
I've recently become aware of a 1940 journal article that includes a sketch map of places to go horse riding, using Duntroon as the base. The article mentions, and the sketch map shows, a number of stock routes in the area stretching from
Gungahlin in the north to Cotter Road in the south: C. E. McK 1940, 'Where shall we ride near Canberra?', Journal of the Royal Military College of Australia, vol. 27, no. 34, pp. 20-2, https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-1422782330.
And isn’t it a shame that ‘shall’ is disappearing from the English language? Google’s ngram viewer shows that its use has fallen 74% between when I was born and 2019. Sigh!
