Jacana at Rowes Lagoon

My reading of HANZAB - not the clearest account in that work - is that it was pretty much North of the Hunter  until about 1970.  Since then there have been records in the Windsor area and down to Bermagui.  I am told, by a very reliable source,  there is a record from somewhere near Adelaide in 2000.  But nothing so far in Vic.

Some el Nina and/or climate change things going on maybe? I wonder what their historical range was in the 19th century?  I have just been looking for my very battered 1960s ed of Cayley's 'What bird is that' for a clue. Can't seem to find it. But most useful and interesting would be HANZAB on the matter of historical range. eBird has a smattering of records for as far back as the 1960s at Pitt Town Lagoon near Richmond and one near Shellharbour around the same time.  Not complete I know, but interesting.

I received a text message yesterday alerting me to sighting of a Jacana at Rowes Lagoon. The Eremaea site this morning has a note entered by newish COG member DK, saying the bird was feeding about 50m out on Sunday. As the Eremaea moderator says, an "extraordinary" sighting, and noted it was possibly the first for the southern tablelands since 1932 when one was seen at Gilgandra. I'm a little tempted to take a long detour on a trip to the Riverina thus morning in case it's still there!
