Thank you Mark. I wondered if ‘McPherson NHUSA’ might refer to a place called McPherson in New Hampshire, USA, but couldn’t find any such place on Google Maps – other than McPherson’s gun shop in New Hampshire!

Morecombe’s app’s call does not provide a location.

David Stewart’s app gives ‘Atkinson’s Dam, Lowood SE QLD’, which is between Brisbane and Toowoomba.

I just listened to the Pizzey and Knight app.  It would appear the "Australian Painted-snipe" calls are not of the Australian species but it appears that they are of the Greater Painted Snipe Rostratula benghalensis. Most of the calls of all Australian species are listed as to the region/site of the recording, and are mostly by Fred van Gessel, a good friend of mine. The "Australian Painted-snipe" is listed as McPherson NHUSA, which I assume is either an international group or the locality (?) where the call was recorded. I don't have access to either David Stewart's or the Morcombe apps but wouldn't be surprised if they are also of the Afro/Asian bird. I have seen the GP-s in both continents and couldn't tell them apart from the Australian birds.

Be handy if people with the Stewart and Morcombe apps could also check where the recordings came from.

Greetings. I imagine that everyone is aware of the current crowd funding appeal to support recovery-oriented research on the critically endangered Australian Painted-Snipe https://chuffed.org/project/paintedsnipe . Both COG and the Canberra Birds Conservation Fund are supporting it.

The fund-raising publicity all states that ‘no-one has ever recorded its call’. But there are calls for this species on David Stewart’s ‘Australian Bird Calls’ app, the Pizzey & Knight app, and Morcombe’s app.

Does anyone have any insights into this apparent inconsistency?

David
