While I don’t wish to make light of the Noisy Miner problem, an incident I witnessed last Christmas was somewhat amusing. Early one quiet Sunday morning in a carpark at the Holt No.1 Playing Field I saw a small dog – it resembled a Maltese Terrier sporting a buzz cut – chase away a group of Crested Pigeons pecking peacefully nearby. The pigeons landed further away only to be pursued and put to flight again by the yapping dog. Then, in a quest for more windmills to joust at, “Yap-Yap” put up a flock of galahs and a couple of Magpies, however, its triumph was short-lived when three or four Noisy Miners swooped at it. They may have even made contact with the dog because it streaked away across the field yelping piteously to where a girl stood laughing. Anyhow, she then attached a leash to Y-Y’s collar. End of story.
