Peter

Agree with your first line

Full frame certainly is not needed for 'quality'.  The glassware does matter as you say, as does the ability of an individual to lug said piece of equipment to the intended place of use.

Pray tell where you can get a new Sony A7RIII for A$2000, would love to know, I've looked...

Team,

Good images do not require expensive equipment.  Its about timing, location, perseverance and luck.

Any full frame camera body will do and a 600mm telephoto helps but only for the smaller birds. Full frame bodies are relatively cheap these days.  A new Sony A7riii will only cost you $2000 because the A7riv has been out for a while.  Same can be said with Canon and Nikon too.

Brand new full frames are certainly within most enthusiasts grasp, but it is the lens that makes the real difference.  There you just buy what you can afford.  My Sigma 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 is deemed one of the sharped zooms around but its only $2200.   Tamron and Sigma Zooms are less.  If you want a prime though; yes you will have to outlay some real money.
