Superb Parrots

I spent some time watching a loose flock of about 12 birds at the Pinnacle last Thursday (31st). For about 15 minutes I watched a group of 6 feeding on the ground on the seeds of a large patch of native Crowfoot (Erodium crinitum). The group consisted of 2 adult males and 4 juveniles, a few of whom made begging noises and motions towards the adults from time to time, despite clearly being able to forage for themselves. The begging became more persistent after the group flew up into nearby trees, but at no stage did I see any of the juveniles being fed by an adult — they all seemed to have gone beyond the dependent stage (at least in the opinion of the adult birds).

My son saw at least 40 Superb Parrots about 4:45 pm on 1 January on Mildura St Fyshwick, on the grassed area across the road from Canberra Milk.  Looking at the eBird Australia map this seems an unusual location for them, with no records for at least 2.5 km away for all of 2020.  Jack Holland

A flock of ten or more regularly around Wanniassa, with at least two begging youngsters. Sometimes over my place, or stopping in neighbouring large trees

Graeme, a flock of Superbs the same size or larger was flying and calling between JRH Park and the big old gum trees in Watson dog park, under the power lines, yesterday late afternoon. Libby

Hi,
Last week a flock of about a dozen Superb Parrots again feeding in the E. polyanthemos  at the top end of Chisholm Street.  Also seen in the bush behind the southern end of Duffy Street.
Best, Graeme
