I dug around and found I did have a picture of the nest ...

... but only after I discovered it was in fact a nest (complete with 3 eggs) and put it back on the parcel carrier of the bike where the mystery bird had constructed it. Because I had thought it was an incomplete nest initially, I took it out into
better light to examine it and only then discovered the "pocket" containing the eggs. I think it had already been abandoned as a result of noise in the house upstairs over the preceding few days (house was unoccupied before this), but I put it back with the
pocket on top (as shown in this picture). No birds ever returned.
