Yesterday Nick Nicholls and I visited sites around Gundaroo. Several Yellow Boxes were in flower. Normally, the flowering trees would attract many insects and many birds, notably honeyeaters. But this time only few insects were present (albeit
this may have been more a sign of the dire drought conditions), and birds did not visit the flowers, although many White-plumed Honeyeaters, some Noisy Friarbirds and White-browed Woodswallows were present. It seemed the flowers were poor in nectar, an assessment
supported by some beekeepers.
