Thanks Isobel.

Long-leaved Box or Bundy is Eucalyptus goniocalyx. While it is rough-barked and can look similar to Apple Box, Eucalyptus bridgesiana, it is only reasonably closely related - the juvenile or coppice leaves, buds and fruits are the best ways to distinguish these species. However, locally Long-leaved Box is more likely to be found to the north of the ACT, where it rarely grows into a substantial tree. My recollection is that the large, rough-barked eucalypts on Kellys Lane are Apple Box.

There is a third species that can look similar: Mealy Bundy or Eucalypt nortonii. This is closely related to ad very similar to Long-leaved Box, and can be found towards the south of the ACT. It also rarely grows into a substantial tree. Mealy Bundy has glaucous, waxy new growth, buds and fruit.

As well as candlebarks, peppermints and other eucalypts, there is also a nice stand of Snowgum, Eucalyptus pauciflora, on Kellys Lane.

Regards

Steve

John et al.

it looks like a long-leaved box, and if there are Candlebarks there too, it would be Apple Box, as Jenny has suggested. Nancy Burbidge described Eucalyptus bridgesiana as the long-leaved box of drainage lines and gullies in the ACT.
