There is another part to Wayne’s question. I believe that for decades in the UK, newspapers would publish first annual observations of migrating cuckoos, swallows,
swifts…….. Not because of being unexpected. And to annoy Wayne more, at least one Koel is near my home as at yesterday. The Koel is probably the second most complained about bird in Canberra, after the Magpie.

There is a lot of avian activity associated with the Melbourne Cup. Well over half the field are turkeys and the stands are full of geese, galahs and drongos!

Just a question of getting the balance right, Wayne. I thought Lach’s message about a near view of a mating was very reportable.
We all have our preferences. Personally, I would like to hear more about emergent ducklings of the A Wood Duck, Australia’s favourite maned duck. I have sometimes wondered if
it is a coincidence that the first of these appear around Melbourne Cup Day.

Am I just being a grumpy old person or do other chatliners share my view that Koels are now a sufficiently well established feature of Canberra’s bird
scene that we don’t really need to know about each and every one that turns up?
