Prue and I did our winter survey this morning, in decidedly cold conditions. There was very little bird activity at several sites
but we did eventually total 37 species with 23 of these
recorded during our 10 minutes counts.
Besides the challenging weather we had the new extension of the woodland sanctuary fence to deal with, which meant some revising of our normal route – over half our sites are outside the fence.
Only a couple of mixed flocks
were encountered; these
included such species as Brown, Yellow-rumped and Buff-rumped Thornbills, Speckled Warblers, pardalotes,
Golden Whistlers, Scarlet Robins, Weebills and a good range of honeyeaters in small numbers (White-naped, Brown-headed, Fuscous, White-plumed, White-eared and Yellow-faced). The only raptor recorded was a Wedge-tailed Eagle. A Red-browed Finch with a
mixed flock was a good record for the reserve.
Other fauna included 2 Wallaroos
at site 2 and a Swamp Wallaby, with Common Froglet and Verreaux’s Tree Frog
heard calling.
