Hi Julie
the black stilt hide is closed, but if lucky you can still find some - in the wild - just near the Glentanner community on the Mt Cook road. That's where we saw the five juveniles last week. Adults have also been reported and photographed (2/3 weeks ago)
at the Ahuriri River. We could not get close to the river (I'm sure the locals know how), but is also a good place for black-fronted tern. We did the yellow-eyed penguin tour in Dunedin having not seen them before and saw 3 from the trenches. The Albatross
centre also does a dusk blue penguin tour. The albatross tour is quite interesting but the viewing area is behind glass and the ones we saw were not close. Hundreds of silver gulls though.Arthur's Pass is a good place for kea.
We saw the most tui (on the SI) at Ship's Creek and Orokonui.
The kiwi tour at Okarito boasts a 97% success rate. You can see the white heron from the road going in to Okarito (at times but not close). We had luck at Lake Mahinapua where 2 came very close to us. There were people swimming in the lake and they didn't
seem to mind. A local man told us that late in the evening more than 20 come down to the lake's edge. That was also our best sighting of the weka.
Around Moeraki/Shag Point was the best place we found for spotted shags, an easy 200 between the 2 locations.
Lake Wanaka the best for scaup and the crested grebe.
I agree with David that it is hard work.On 13 December 2017 at 08:15, Martin Butterfield
