Is hard to tell for sure from the photo. Certainly one of the Ninox owls but
there is likely only 2 contenders. Their size is the big feature and nothing
to go by on that in the photo or message. Powerful Owl is much bigger than
Boobook. Then again the likely young one appears to have a whitish breast
and a dark patch around the eyes. This fits Powerful Owls best. Not such an
obvious difference between adults & young of other species. No reason why it
wouldn't be Powerful Owls.

A neighbour took these photos recently and is seeking ID. She lives on the
edge of the Deua NP, on the old Cooma Road, just north of the Big Hole area.
We're hoping they might be Powerful Owls with young.
