Looking at my video and its time line.  I think the male had been sitting on the 'blob' before we saw it. As Geoffrey will attest, all this was happening about 90 m away from us so it was not obvious visually but only noticed when images were studied

Circumstances not favourable for photography but it seems to me looking at a couple of not very serious snaps for the record that the pair MIGHT have a chick.  By no means conclusive.  I think Steve has video of an aggressive lunge by the male scattering the duck when they approached the possible chick location.  The cryptic patch does look a bit like the chick picture in HANZAB.
