Another possibility is Satin Bowerbird. Though I suppose everyone knows they have a huge variety of their own and mostly weird sounds and very good mimics too.

Thanks Virginia

I think I know pretty much all the calls of Koel, unless they make a scream like call which I have not heard before. The call appeared to be coming very close to the Koel location and was simultaneous with the koel –koel call. I guess I will know if I ever hear and see one at the same time.

That said another person also heard a strange call in the Duffy area.

Thanks for your interest.

Jean

Hi Jean,

Could it be that you are hearing a female koel calling in response to the male koel? Have you tried looking up the female koel call too? Just a thought.

Cheers,

Virginia

I have been wondering about the strange call I have heard in answer to a Koel call, a couple of times yesterday and maybe the day before that. Having played the call on the web, the call is very similar, except my bird only called a few times in conjunction with the Koel. I wonder if anyone else heard this call in the Weston Duffy region?
Jean

This morning I heard a Channel-billed Cuckoo call just the once down Haig Park way, perhaps somewhere near Sullivan's 'Creek'.

I grabbed the camera and set off.

I heard a family of Australian Ravens, along with some smaller players, going beserk.

Aha!

So I stalked the noise carefully and was guided to the fox that was running around on the ANU oval next to Barry Drive being harrassed by said Australian Ravens and sundries.

There was no sign of the Cuckoo.

regards

Con
